Roulette Strategy

To a player, the strengths of roulette are also its weaknesses. There is no card counting needed, no great knowledge or ability to bluff. Just thinking where you think the ball will land.

Over the years people have tried to devise systems to tackle the roulette wheel. Maybe Albert Einstein had it right when he said , "You cannot beat a roulette table unless you steal money from it" he wasn't joking.

The most famous system to beat the roulette odds is the Martingale system. This involves doubling up as soon as a loss is incurred. This system is good in theory but if you lose a few times in succession and don't have enough to double up you lose the lot.
Fully aware of the system, casinos get around it by imposing maximum bets on the roulette table.

There have been attempts over the years to predict and calculate the mechanics of the roulette wheel. Many have failed but some have succeeded most notably Spaniard, Gonzalo Garcia-Pelayo who studied the tendencies of the roulette wheels at the Casino de Madrid. Using family members to assist they bet on the most likely numbers and won over a million dollars. Their winnings were held back by the casino but after 10 years of litigation the Spanish Supreme court ruled in his favor.

The Supreme Court ruling said Garcia-Pelayo and company used "ingenuity and computer techniques. That's all."

In other words as soon as you come up with a roulette strategy that works they throw you out of the casino.

Given that people still try to come up with a roulette strategy that cracks open the roulette odds and yields winnings beyond belief.

But don't be fooled. The house gives for itself the mathematical edge by framing the roulette odds accordingly. So what can you do about it?

The answer is not much. People have tried and they are now sitting in the street waving a cup at people as they go bye.

When a person first thinks about a roulette system they start off with a 50-50 bet. Next thing a brainwave comes to them. "I can bet double the amount to win the same amount, only thing I am doing is increasing my chances by one-sixth."

Betting on two columns gives you 24 chances to win and 13/14 blanks. That's a whole lot better than 50-50. Not you just feel like the guy who stumbled on the money tree.

Problem is it's the casino's money tree. If you win you are only going to be paid 12 times the amount you bet instead of the 13/14. The casino gets to place the 0/00 slots on the wheel without any penalty. Even when the casino wins it loses.

In the long term, for every $100 you bet on roulette, the casino will take $2.70.

The key thing about roulette that you have to understand is that no matter what you do you can not affect the returns. Unlike poker they are locked in stone.

Throw away that pad of yours where you recorded the previous numbers that came up. Chance has no memory and certainly doesn't know who you are. The roulette table doesn't remember you as the unlucky or lucky player and certainly doesn't remember your lucky numbers.

If you do strike it lucky and get ahead then quit. Unlike you, casinos can absorb the losses and the longer you play, the more chances you give to the casino to get it all back.
